Enabling your dreams to become reality
It should be simple… You have a dream to create a ‘better building’. A building where its users are involved at every stage of development, a building that after 12 months from opening displays an ‘A’ or ‘B’ rated DEC but, most importantly, a building that ticks all those boxes because sustainability has been embedded into its core.
And yet, faced with the starkness of reality that dream appears further away. The problems right in front of you seem endless; the Design team are not on board, budget cuts limit the scope of your project, last minute value-engineering leads to reduced sustainability performance, the building just receives a 'good' BREEAM assessment and a ‘D’ DEC rating and even the building's users appear unimpressed and unwilling to make behavioural changes.
This all too familiar situation happening across the public sector is becoming a real hindrance to the future sustainability and carbon performance of our built stock.
But maybe it’s time to embrace the cliché and let us make your building dreams become a reality?

Better Buildings in Action: Leicester’s story
The University of Leicester set rigid targets for carbon reduction. In 2012 when the George Davies Centre was designed the defining aim was to ensure as small a carbon footprint was added as possible. One year after it opened it achieved a DEC ‘A’ rating, demonstrating that designing low energy buildings can be achieved if the right approach is taken.
The building has won multiple awards[1], uses only 10% of the energy of the building it replaced and is the largest commercial Passivhaus in the UK.
How can you find out more?
Creating Better Buildings is a learning programme for public sector estates personnel and their finance counterparts which explores optional building standards and demonstrates how a combination of Passivhaus and Soft Landings can give you a low carbon building in operation which provides a comfortable and flexible space for your staff.
Join Dr Emma Fieldhouse (Environmental Manager at Leicester University when the George Davies building was designed) and Dr Stephen Ball from Couch Perry Wilkes (the lead Sustainable M&E expert on the project) who will take you through Leicester’s journey and show you how to get around all the usual blockages to achieving better buildings for your own estate.
